Evolution: The Mystery of Imperfect Mimicry
نویسنده
چکیده
Mimicry has long provided some of the most persuasive examples of the power of natural selection. However, some mimics are quite poor. A new study shows that mechanisms by which animals learn might explain how imperfect mimics survive.

Ecological and Evolutionary Processes Drive the Origin and Maintenance of Imperfect Mimicry
Although the forces behind the evolution of imperfect mimicry remain poorly studied, recent hypotheses suggest that relaxed selection on small-bodied individuals leads to imperfect mimicry. While evolutionary history undoubtedly affects the development of imperfect mimicry, ecological community context has largely been ignored and may be an important driver of imperfect mimicry. Here we investi...
متن کاملThe effect of alternative prey on the dynamics of imperfect Batesian and Müllerian mimicries.
Both Batesian and Müllerian mimicries are considered classical evidence of natural selection where predation pressure has, at times, created a striking similarity between unrelated prey species. Batesian mimicry, in which palatable mimics resemble unpalatable aposematic species, is parasitic and only beneficial to the mimics. By contrast, in classical Müllerian mimicry the cost of predators' av...
متن کاملStimulus Salience as an Explanation for Imperfect Mimicry
UNLABELLED The theory of mimicry explains how a mimic species gains advantage by resembling a model species [1-3]. Selection for increased mimic-model similarity should then result in accurate mimicry, yet there are many surprising examples of poor mimicry in the natural world [4-8]. The existence of imperfect mimics remains a major unsolved conundrum. We propose and experimentally test a novel...
متن کاملNorth American velvet ants form one of the world’s largest known Müllerian mimicry complexes
Color mimicry is often celebrated as one of the most straightforward examples of evolution by natural selection, as striking morphological similarity between species evolves in response to a shared predation pressure. Recently, a large North American mimetic complex was described that included 65 species of Dasymutilla velvet ants (Hymenoptera: Mutillidae). Beyond those 65 species, little is kn...
